اللَّهُ أَكْبَر
Allāhu Akbar
Allah is the Greatest.
Said while raising the hands to begin the prayer.

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ، وَلَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ
Subḥānaka Allāhumma wa biḥamdika, wa tabāraka-smuka, wa taʿālā jadduka, wa lā ilāha ghayruk
Glory is to You, O Allah, and praise; blessed is Your name and exalted is Your majesty. There is no god but You.
Recited quietly after the opening takbir.
Reciting Al-Fatiha and a portion of the Qur'an while standing.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismillāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm
In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ١
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi Rabbi l-ʿālamīn
1All praise is for Allah—Lord of all worlds,
الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ ٢
Ar-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm
2the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ ٣
Māliki yawmi d-dīn
3Master of the Day of Judgment.
إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ٤
Iyyāka naʿbudu wa iyyāka nastaʿīn
4You ˹alone˺ we worship and You ˹alone˺ we ask for help.
اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ٥
Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭa l-mustaqīm
5Guide us along the Straight Path,
صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ ٦
Ṣirāṭa lladhīna anʿamta ʿalayhim ghayri l-maghḍūbi ʿalayhim wa lā ḍ-ḍāllīn
6the Path of those You have blessed—not those You are displeased with, or those who are astray.
Recited in every unit (rak'ah) of the prayer.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismillāhi r-Raḥmāni r-Raḥīm
In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.
قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ١
Qul huwa Allāhu aḥad
1Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “He is Allah—One ˹and Indivisible˺;
اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ ٢
Allāhu ṣ-ṣamad
2Allah—the Sustainer ˹needed by all˺.
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ٣
Lam yalid wa lam yūlad
3He has never had offspring, nor was He born.
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ ٤
Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad
4And there is none comparable to Him.”
An example of a short surah recited after Al-Fatiha.
Glorifying Allah while bowing.
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ
Subḥāna Rabbiya l-ʿAẓīm
Glory is to my Lord, the Most Great.
Recited while bowing, typically an odd number of times (three or more).
Standing upright again after bowing.
سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ
Samiʿa Allāhu liman ḥamidah, Rabbanā wa laka l-ḥamd
Allah hears those who praise Him. Our Lord, to You is all praise.
The first phrase is said while rising; the second when standing upright.
Glorifying Allah in prostration — the closest position to Him.
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْأَعْلَى
Subḥāna Rabbiya l-Aʿlā
Glory is to my Lord, the Most High.
Recited in each prostration, typically an odd number of times (three or more).
The brief sitting between the two prostrations.
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي
Rabbi-ghfir lī, Rabbi-ghfir lī
My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me.
Said while sitting briefly between the first and second prostration.
The testimony of faith, sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, and ending the prayer.
التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلَّهِ وَالصَّلَوَاتُ وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
At-taḥiyyātu lillāhi wa ṣ-ṣalawātu wa ṭ-ṭayyibāt. As-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuha n-nabiyyu wa raḥmatu Allāhi wa barakātuh. As-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibādi Allāhi ṣ-ṣāliḥīn. Ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh.
All greetings, prayers and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
Recited while sitting, in the middle and at the end of the prayer.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīm wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd. Allāhumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammad wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīm wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd.
O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent prayers upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
Recited in the final sitting after the Tashahhud.
السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ
As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatu Allāh
Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.
Said while turning the face to the right, then repeated to the left, to conclude the prayer.
